Week Subject: Native Americans
Hello, our topic this week is Native Americans, specifically the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo tribes.  The worksheet I gave you today is going to be your homework over the next few days as we discuss the similarities and differences between the three tribes.  We talked about what a venn diagram is in class.  I would like you to fill out the venn diagram by labeling each circle with its own tribe name (either Powhatan, Lakota, or Pueblo).  Then, write down things that make each tribe different in their own circle, if two or three tribes have something similar, you write that fact in the overlapping part of the circles.  Please turn the assignment in  on 9/16/13.  You have a while to work on it because we will be talking about Native Americans a lot in the next couple of weeks. (We have already talked about all of the directions for the assignment and parts of a venn diagram in class)

I will give you your compass rose and world map quiz back at the beginning of next week.  I wanted to give you a practice US map to be able to quiz yourself on all the features we are talking about in class!  Test yourself with the blank map and then check yourself with the key map.  Because this unit is so big, I just need you to keep practicing on the US features we are discussing in class.  Our US feature quiz, again, is in two weeks (9/12/13).

Since we were working on US maps this week, you should start looking over different US maps that show the Appalachian Mountains, Rocky Mountains, Rio Grande River, Mississippi River, James River, and the Great Lakes.  Because we live in America, we need to know locations of important geographical features of our country.  Those who went on the hike this past weekend heard me say that the area we were in is a part of the Appalachian Mountains.  Later in the week, we will talk about the history of each of these areas, too!  In about two weeks, we will have a quiz (9/12/13) on these features so please practice and be prepared!  I have provided a map for you to study with.  You can click on it to may it bigger!

We have been working on map legends and world maps in class this week.  We talked about what a compass rose is, and we labeled the world's 7 continents, 5 oceans, and the equator.  For homework, I need you to look over the world map examples and practice labeling the oceans, continents, and equator (practice map and quiz map linked).  I have provided a compass rose picture with the directions labeled, and a blank compass rose for you to practice on.  Make sure and practice because next week we will have a quiz (8/29/13) on how to label a compass rose and the different components on a world map (continents, oceans, equator).

Hey boys and girls, since it is our first day together, I would like to learn a little more about you!  We talked about this in class, and you got paper copies to take home.  I would like it if you could fill out the "get to know you" and "history questionnaire" worksheets for me and bring them back to class by Friday (8/23/13).  Thank you!  Have fun with these questions!!  (Links are provided if either worksheet is lost or damaged)
