Are you looking for a new pet?  Come visit the Charlottesville SPCA (click "Charlottesville SPCA" for their website) this weekend for our sale!  Adult dog adoption fees are 50% off this week!  If you're a cat person, cat fees are two cats for the price of one!  If you're not ready to actually adopt a pet, you can foster or come volunteer!  You may see me!!  I volunteer a couple times a week at the shelter playing with the cats and walking the dogs.  Sharing your love with these animals feels great!  At least get out this weekend and get some fresh air!  Have a great weekend!  If you have any questions, just contact me.

If you are ever confused about something we have talked about in class or need help, you can come visit me during lunch to talk or we can meet after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Do not hesitate to come talk to me if you are having problems, if it is school related or not.  Parents, also let me know if we need to meet to talk.  My phone number and email address are in the school directory.

I will give you your compass rose and world map quiz back at the beginning of next week.  I wanted to give you a practice US map to be able to quiz yourself on all the features we are talking about in class!  Test yourself with the blank map and then check yourself with the key map.  Because this unit is so big, I just need you to keep practicing on the US features we are discussing in class.  Our US feature quiz, again, is in two weeks (9/12/13).

Reminder:
This Thursday (8/29/13) you will have a quiz on labeling a compass rose and labeling a world map with the correct continent and ocean names in the right locations.  Then, be able to show where on the map the equator is located.

Since we were working on US maps this week, you should start looking over different US maps that show the Appalachian Mountains, Rocky Mountains, Rio Grande River, Mississippi River, James River, and the Great Lakes.  Because we live in America, we need to know locations of important geographical features of our country.  Those who went on the hike this past weekend heard me say that the area we were in is a part of the Appalachian Mountains.  Later in the week, we will talk about the history of each of these areas, too!  In about two weeks, we will have a quiz (9/12/13) on these features so please practice and be prepared!  I have provided a map for you to study with.  You can click on it to may it bigger!

Hey kiddos and parents,
I plan on going on a little trek in the Shenandoah Park tomorrow morning for a couple hours.  I have already sent out flyers to parents about it (meeting location, duration of the "hike", which trail we plan on taking, what to bring, cost of parking, etc).  Remember, those that are going need to meet in the school parking lot at 8:30 am to be able to get parking and start walking before the hottest part of the day.

I think hiking outdoors is great exercise, but also a great educational experience.  I grew up exploring in the woods, and I really appreciated the beauty of nature in a very personal way.  Also, we are so close to the beautiful park area and mountains that we should take advantage of it!  I hope many of you will be able to make it!  If not, I'm sure there will be plenty of hikes throughout the year.  We have a few parents chaperoning, but the more the merrier!!
TIME: 8:30 AM in school parking lot for carpools; Hike duration: around 1 1/2 hours, BRING WATER
Here's some inspiration to come or just go out and explore nature....

Friendly Reminder:
Everyone needs to have the "get to know you" and "history questionnaire" worksheets to me by tomorrow (8/23/13).  The links are on the very first post if you have lost yours.

We have been working on map legends and world maps in class this week.  We talked about what a compass rose is, and we labeled the world's 7 continents, 5 oceans, and the equator.  For homework, I need you to look over the world map examples and practice labeling the oceans, continents, and equator (practice map and quiz map linked).  I have provided a compass rose picture with the directions labeled, and a blank compass rose for you to practice on.  Make sure and practice because next week we will have a quiz (8/29/13) on how to label a compass rose and the different components on a world map (continents, oceans, equator).

Hey boys and girls, since it is our first day together, I would like to learn a little more about you!  We talked about this in class, and you got paper copies to take home.  I would like it if you could fill out the "get to know you" and "history questionnaire" worksheets for me and bring them back to class by Friday (8/23/13).  Thank you!  Have fun with these questions!!  (Links are provided if either worksheet is lost or damaged)
